Big payers ranked by Q1 net income

The nation's largest payers have filed their first-quarter earnings reports, revealing which pulled in the largest income and which grew their incomes the most year over year.

While Centene took in the lowest overall income, it increased the most year over year. The payer also recorded the largest increase in first-quarter revenues.

Payers ranked by first-quarter net income:

1. UnitedHealth

UnitedHealth Group recorded $5.1 billion in first-quarter net earnings, increasing from nearly $5 billion in 2021, a 3.4 percent increase.

2. CVS Health (Aetna)

Net income increased 4 percent year over year, rising from $2.2 billion in 2021 to $2.3 billion in 2022.

3. Anthem

The company's net income grew to nearly $1.8 billion from $1.67 billion in 2021, a 7.7 percent increase.

4. Cigna

Shareholders' net income for the first quarter of 2022 was $1.2 billion, only slightly more than the first quarter of 2021, or a 1.2 percent increase.

5. Humana

Net income grew 12.3 percent year over year, growing to $930 million in 2022 from $828 million in 2021.

6. Centene

Net earnings in the first quarter of 2022 were $849 million, compared to $699 million in 2021, a 21.5 percent increase.
