From facing the largest insurance fine in Georgia state history to being named one of the best companies to work for, here are seven recent stories about the Indianapolis-based payer:

Former New York nurse sues Anthem in overtime dispute

A former utilization review nurse filed a proposed class-action lawsuit April 13 against Anthem over claims the payer knew she and others were routinely forced to work more than 40 hours a week without receiving overtime pay. 

Judge extends Northside-Anthem contract 'until further order'

A Georgia judge ruled April 13 that all 400,000 patients at Atlanta-based Northside Hospital System with Anthem insurance will remain in network "until further order" following a contract dispute between the payer and provider. Northside and Anthem must resolve their dispute over reimbursement rates with the Georgia Department of Insurance before June 15.

Anthem named to Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For"

Anthem took the 57th spot on Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For" list in 2022. Fortune surveyed 870,000 employees and included questions about trust, respect, credibility, fairness, pride and camaraderie. Blue Shield of California and Mutual of Omaha were also named payers.

Anthem wins discrimination lawsuit over alleged unlawfully denied promotions 

A federal judge in Missouri sided with Anthem on March 30 after an employee sued the payer for alleged harassment, retaliation and discrimination based on her race, age and disability. The judge ruled the plaintiff did not even apply to some of the contested positions, she was not qualified for the positions she did apply for and her race did not affect employment decisions.

Anthem, MaineHealth dispute sparks state investigation

A contract dispute between Anthem and MaineHealth has led the Maine Bureau of Insurance to investigate Anthem through a market conduct examination, including a review of provider payment issues. MaineHealth cited $70 million in unpaid claims from Anthem as the reason for the upcoming split in January. The Maine Medical Association said other providers in the state have faced similar payment challenges.

Georgia fines Anthem BCBS $5M

Georgia's insurance commissioner fined Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield $5 million March 29 for violations of state laws and agency rules and regulation. The issues included improper claims settlement practices, violations of the Prompt Pay Act, failure to reply to consumer complaints in a timely manner, inaccurate provider directories and significant delays in loading provider contracts. The fine was the largest in the agency's history.

Anthem sued over alleged California labor code violations

A former Anthem referral specialist is suing the payer for non-compensation after being required to interrupt, shorten or miss rest and meal breaks. The plaintiff also alleges not being reimbursed for remote work supplies.
