ACA signups surpass 20 million for the 1st time

Over 20 million people have enrolled in individual insurance plans on the ACA exchange for 2024, CMS said Jan. 10.

The enrollment total is the highest in the exchange's history, surpassing last year's enrollment of 16 million. According to CMS, 3.7 million enrollees are new to the exchange, while 16.6 million had active coverage in 2023 or were automatically reenrolled for 2024.

Enhanced subsidies have driven an increase in enrollment in exchange plans, The New York Times reported Jan. 10. Cynthia Cox, director of the Program on the Affordable Care Act at KFF, told the Times some of the increase is attributable to people signing up for ACA insurance after being disenrolled from Medicaid.

Open enrollment on the ACA exchange runs through Jan. 16.
