8 recent lawsuits involving payers

Becker's Hospital Review reported these eight lawsuits involving payers since Aug. 1, beginning with the most recent.

1. Texas hospital asks judge to dismiss Aetna's claims in billing suit
North Cypress (Texas) Medical Center requested that a federal judge nix Aetna's claims in a lawsuit stating the health insurer paid too little on thousands of medical claims.

2. Premera Blue Cross accused of destroying evidence in data breach case            
The plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit against Premera Blue Cross, which involves a 2014 data security incident, claim the payer "willfully" destroyed evidence that would have provided details of the breach.

3. Erlanger sues TennCare, claims state Medicaid program puts insurers before safety-net hospitals   
Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System filed a lawsuit against Tennessee's managed Medicaid program, claiming TennCare underpays safety-net hospitals for emergency care to "enrich insurance companies."

4. Blue Cross: North Carolina hospital engaged in a '$76M health insurance swindle'        
The legal battle between a North Carolina hospital and Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina continued with new court filings Aug. 20.

5. Judge approves Anthem's $115M data breach settlement    
A federal district judge in California approved a $115 million settlement to resolve a 2015 data breach at Anthem that exposed 78 million members' personal information.

Cigna defeated a lawsuit filed by North Cypress (Texas) Medical Center accusing the insurer of underpaying medical benefit claims.

7. Steward Health Care, BCBS settle 5-year antitrust lawsuit: 3 things to know           
Boston-based Steward Health Care and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island reached a settlement over a lawsuit claiming the health insurer obstructed Steward's attempted $40 million takeover of a Rhode Island hospital.

8. Montana health insurer wins lawsuit over cost-sharing reduction payments           
A federal judge ruled Sept. 4 that health insurers are entitled to unpaid cost-sharing reduction payments, which help insurers subsidize the cost of coverage for low-income Americans.
