9 recent payer moves to exit or enter markets

From a nonprofit payer leaving the state it's headquartered in to Delaware allowing more payers into its marketplace, these are nine recent moves to exit or enter markets:

Centene subsidiary awarded Delaware Medicaid contract
Centene subsidiary Delaware First Health was awarded a statewide Medicaid managed care contract July 12. With the Delaware contract, Centene is entering its 30th managed care state.

Geisinger expands Medicaid coverage to all of Pennsylvania
Medicaid coverage under the Geisinger Health Plan will be available to all eligible residents in Pennsylvania starting Sept. 1, the Danville, Pa.-based system said July 6. Geisinger Health Plan currently serves more than 200,000 Medicaid members.

Alignment Healthcare expanding to Texas, Florida markets
Alignment Healthcare said June 29 it is expanding into Florida and Texas to reach an additional 1.1 million Medicare-eligible seniors. The Orange, Calif.-based insurtech carrier of Medicare Advantage plans will also expand its business in the four states where it currently operates, resulting in a total of 8.2 million Medicare-eligible seniors in 52 counties under its reach by 2023.

AmeriHealth Caritas, Aetna will expand to Delaware market
For the first time, Delaware said June 27 it will allow three payers to offer plans on the state's ACA marketplace in 2023: AmeriHealth Caritas, Aetna and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Delaware.

Colorado receives federal green light to launch state-sponsored health plan
On June 23, HHS approved Colorado's plan to launch a state-sponsored health plan on the ACA marketplace that payers will be required to sell at a lower cost. The Colorado Option will only be sold to individuals and small employers with fewer than 100 employees. The state estimates that around 10,000 Coloradans will gain access to health insurance under the new plan in 2023, and up to 32,000 people by 2027.

Walmart expands doula coverage to 3 more states
Walmart is expanding access to doula services for employees on a company medical plan in Louisiana, Indiana and Illinois. The benefit covers up to $1,000 for doula services during pregnancy through the company's Life with Baby program. The service was first offered in Georgia last year.

Walgreens partners with Buckeye Health Plan to expand Health Corners business
Walgreens Health said June 21 it is partnering with Buckeye Health Plan to expand its Health Corners service to Medicaid members in five Ohio locations this summer. By the end of this year, the company expects to open approximately 100 locations for its health corners.

Banner, Hue Health launch direct primary care health plan in Colorado
Arvada, Colo.-based Hue Health said June 21 it is launching a direct primary care health plan with Phoenix-based Banner Health in northern Colorado. The plan, 39North, will be supported by New York City-based Flume Health, a digital administrative platform for health plans.

WEA Trust, Health Tradition Health Plan to exit Wisconsin market
WEA Trust and Health Tradition Health Plan said June 1 they will exit the Wisconsin health insurance market by the end of 2022, citing financial challenges with maintaining the business. The nonprofit Madison-based payer will continue to maintain long-term care, life and vision coverage for its members. As part of the departure, it will gradually lay off 110 employees.
