6 Optum provider purchases in 2022

From a planned buy of home health firm LHC Group for $5.4 billion to previously undisclosed purchases in Oregon, these are six provider acquisitions by Optum reported by Becker's in 2022:

  1. Optum acquired Refresh Mental Health from private equity firm Kelso & Co., Axios reported March 24. Jacksonville Beach, Fla.-based Refresh runs a network of more than 300 outpatient sites across 37 states and has more than 1,500 employees.  

  2. Optum agreed March 29 to buy Lafayette, La.-based LHC Group in a $5.4 billion deal. LHC employs about 30,000 people, including front-line care providers and administrative and support personnel. It has operations in 37 states and cares for more than 500,000 patients annually. The deal is expected to close in early 2023. 

  3. In July, Optum acquired Healthcare Associates of Texas, a Dallas-based physician practice management company, for $300 million. Healthcare Associates of Texas offers family medicine, physical therapy, sleep medicine, a wellness clinic, pharmacy, and lab and imaging services. 

  4. Optum finalized a deal to acquire Houston-based Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, Axios reported in April. Kelsey-Seybold is a group practice offering treatment in 55 medical specialties across 24 locations in the Houston area and employs more than 500 physicians and allied health professionals. It plans to expand to more than 50 locations by 2026. The company also acquired KS Plan Administrators in August, which operates the clinic's Medicare Advantage plan.

  5. Optum was cleared by the Massachusetts attorney general's office to buy Newton-based Atrius Health, a 30-location independent physician organization, on April 21. With the approval, Optum plans to pay $236 million for the health system, which includes 645 physicians and primary care providers.

  6. Optum has quietly acquired at least two independent primary care groups in Oregon, The Lund Report reported April 21. Optum purchased Eugene-based Oregon Medical Group and Portland-based GreenField Health. Combined, the two systems have about 120 doctors and clinicians at 11 facilities. Though the deals closed in 2020 and 2021, they were first reported this year.
