UnitedHealth to buy home-health firm LHC Group

UnitedHealth Group's Optum unit has agreed to buy Lafayette, La.-based home-health firm LHC.

The companies said in a March 29 news release that the agreement will strengthen their ability to provide value-based care, especially in the comfort of a patient's home.

LHC employs about 30,000 people, including front-line care providers and administrative and support personnel, according to the release.

Many of LHC's home-health and hospice operations are owned in partnerships with hospital systems, the Wall Street Journal reported. It has operations in 37 states and cares for more than 500,000 patients annually.

The deal is for about $5.4 billion, the Journal reported. UnitedHealth told the publication that the acquisition is expected to close in the second half of 2022.
