Meet UnitedHealth Group’s new CFO

UnitedHealth Group CFO John Rex will step down from the role in September and the company went with an outside choice for his successor. 

Here are six things to know about Wayne DeVeydt, who begins his new role Sept. 2: 

1. Mr. DeVeydt, 55, joined Anthem (now Elevance) in 2005 from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where he served as a partner with a focus on the healthcare sector. 

2. He was named CFO of Anthem in 2007 and served in that role until 2016. 

3. From 2018 to 2020, he served as chairman and CEO of Nashville, Tenn.-based Surgery Partners.

4. He joined private equity firm Bain Capital in 2022 and served as managing director and a member of the portfolio group from North America Private Equity. 

5. Mr. DeVeydt had served on Centene’s board of directors since 2022. He resigned Aug. 1.

6. He will receive an annual base salary of $1 million as UnitedHealth Group’s CFO.
