Paul Markovich — president and CEO of Blue Shield of California’s parent organization, Ascendiun — is joining the CMS and HHS Healthcare Advisory Committee, according to a May 26 LinkedIn post.

The committee, whose members were announced in March, includes Oscar Health board member and Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health CEO Bill Gassen and health information network Availity’s CEO, Russ Thomas. While some members have previous insurer experience, the committee largely lacks representation from big health payers, with Mr. Markovich being a notable exception.

“This workgroup brings together leaders across the industry to help shape that future, and I’m looking forward to collaborating with others who are committed to meaningful progress,” Mr. Markovich said.

The healthcare advisory committee was scheduled to meet for the first time May 18. The group intends to advise HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz, MD, on financing and care delivery for Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program and the ACA marketplace.

At the Becker's 5th Annual Fall Payer Issues Roundtable, taking place November 2–3 in Chicago, payer executives and healthcare leaders will come together to discuss value-based care, regulatory changes, cost management strategies and innovations shaping the future of payer-provider collaboration.
