Brian Evanko took the helm as The Cigna Group’s CEO July 1 as longtime chief David Cordani passed the baton.
Mr. Evanko brings a wealth of experience across the company, including a history of executive-level leadership. He also brings his own vision.
Here are five things to know about Mr. Evanko:
1. Prior to his new role, Mr. Evanko most recently took on the president and COO position in 2025. His appointment aimed to align Evernorth Health Services and Cigna Healthcare under a single leader.
2. Mr. Evanko is a nearly 30-year Cigna veteran, having joined in 1998. He has held a variety of leadership roles over the years. In 2024, his role expanded beyond just his CFO title to also include serving as president and CEO of the company’s insurance business, Cigna Healthcare.
3. Mr. Evanko was the second-highest paid Cigna executive in 2025, following his predecessor, Mr. Cordani. Mr. Evanko’s total compensation for the year was $9,998,401, which included a $1,073,077 base salary.
4. Mr. Evanko has an actuarial background. He began his tenure at Cigna in the company’s actuarial executive development program, an early-career initiative that he eventually led. He received his bachelor’s degree in actuarial science from Pennsylvania State University.
5. Leading up to July, Mr. Evanko had already been vocal about Cigna’s future. He confirmed Cigna will exit the ACA business at the end of 2026, is on track to complete its margin recovery for its stop-loss insurance business in 2027 and is seeking “strategic alternatives” for utilization management subsidiary EviCore. Mr. Evanko will continue shaping the company’s trajectory as Mr. Cordani leaves behind a transformed business.
