Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is moving more than 1,400 employees from its Detroit office in the Renaissance Center to other facilities downtown, the company told Becker’s July 30.
“The move will improve the workplace experience for our employees, while enhancing utilization of our existing space, supporting collaboration in a hybrid work environment and addressing ongoing facility concerns and operational considerations,” the statement said.
Employees will migrate in phases that should wrap up by the end of 2026. The Detroit Free Press reported an upcoming $1.6 billion redevelopment plan for the Renaissance Center led by General Motors and Bedrock. However, the building occupied by BCBS Michigan would be excluded.
BCBS Michigan has been shifting its real estate approach throughout 2026. BCBS Michigan previously said it was relocating roughly 130 employees from its Cascade office to its West Michigan headquarters, Steketee’s Building in Grand Rapids, for “operational efficiency.” BCBS Michigan previously shared renovation plans for the Grand Rapids space and said the Cascade building would be listed for sale in 2027.
The company said 270 colleagues had already been based at Steketee’s, which is currently listed for sale, as well, on Advantage Commercial Real Estate’s website.
