Why 7 payers recently added new roles to their C-suite 

From several positions focused on government relations to a state investing more in value-based care, these are seven inaugural titles recently added to payer C-suites:

  • CareFirst BCBS named Matthew Snyder as its first chief risk officer Nov. 10. He will lead the recently consolidated audit, enterprise risk, special investigations, privacy, and compliance departments to allow the company "to remain competitive and healthy in the industry."

  • Delaware's insurance department selected Cristine Vogel as its first director of value-based healthcare delivery Nov. 9. She will lead initiatives related to value-based care, primary care, PBMs and care affordability.

  • MetroPlusHealth, a municipally-owned nonprofit insurer in New York City, named Erin Drinkwater as its first chief of government relations and strategic partnerships Sept. 29. She will be responsible for developing legislative strategy and outreach to give the company a larger role within the city's healthcare system.

  • Cigna named David Brailer, MD, PhD, as executive vice president and its first chief health officer Aug. 30. He will focus on collaboration between the company's products, technologies and services to drive value and improve members' health.

  • Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island named Talia Brookshire as its first chief diversity officer Aug. 11. She will lead diversity initiatives, multicultural marketing campaigns, and community outreach to help diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. 

  • Fallon Health named Sean Murphy as its first chief network strategist Aug. 5. He will support the company's strategic growth in government markets, including Medicare and Medicaid.

  • Centivo, a self-funded health plan provider centered around value-based care, named Tara Johnson as its first general counsel Aug. 3. She will lead the company's legal operations and will serve as an adviser on all company legal matters.
