UnitedHealth Group has named Mike Cotton as CEO of the company’s Medicaid business, the company confirmed to Becker’s.

The role of Medicaid CEO had been vacant after former CEO Krista Nelson was named COO at Optum Health in May. Bobby Hunter, CEO of UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare division, will take on an expanded role overseeing Medicare and Medicaid.

In May, former UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty stepped down, and Stephen Hemsley returned to lead the business. Since Mr. Hemsley became CEO, the company has shuffled the top leadership roles at Optum, its health services division.

Leadership changes are consistent with UnitedHealth Group’s “longstanding, intentional approach to develop an executive team with a range of experiences across its diverse portfolio of businesses,” the company told Becker’s in June.

Mr. Cotton joined UnitedHealth Group in 2021, according to his LinkedIn profile. He was previously president and CEO of Intermountain’s Select Health.
