Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan has named Barry Thornton II as its next CEO, effective Jan. 1.

He succeeds Brian O’Grady, who is retiring after more than a decade at the company.

Mr. Thornton currently serves as COO at the Lifetime Healthcare Companies, the parent company of CDPHP, which he first joined in 2005. Before that he held leadership roles at UnitedHealth Group.

“I want to thank the CDPHP Board of Directors for this incredible opportunity, as I fundamentally believe regional, not-for-profit health care is the best option consumers can choose,” Mr. Thornton said in a news release. “CDPHP is a rare combination of a high-quality health plan with superior customer service, deep roots in its community and a strong, longstanding commitment to local providers. I am committed to working alongside the outstanding, local CDPHP leadership team to honor and elevate this exceptional brand.”

At the Becker's 5th Annual Fall Payer Issues Roundtable, taking place November 2–3 in Chicago, payer executives and healthcare leaders will come together to discuss value-based care, regulatory changes, cost management strategies and innovations shaping the future of payer-provider collaboration.
