CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield names diversity, equity and inclusion director

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield has named A. Tonya Odom as director of diversity, equity and inclusion; she will be tasked with leading strategies to recruit, develop and retain a diverse workforce.

Ms. Odom has 25 years of experience in strategic diversity planning and leadership, according to a March 10 news release shared with Becker’s. She previously worked at the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 13 years, most recently as chief equal employment opportunity officer. She also served as the first chief diversity officer for the FBI.

Additionally, Ms. Odom is a former civil rights attorney and chief administrative judge for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Washington, D.C.

“A lot of work must be done in the healthcare field to reach equity for all, and this work begins in house,” Ms. Odom said in the release. “I was impressed with CareFirst’s clear prioritization of DEI and know that with the company’s values and goals guiding and pushing us, we can make even larger strides in this area of the healthcare industry.”
