Florida to award 5 Medicaid contracts

Florida intends to award contracts to five organizations to administer its Medicaid managed care program, which provides health coverage to more than 3.4 million people, per Florida Politics.

The six-year contracts were announced April 12 for Florida Community Care (Independent Living Systems), Humana, Simply Healthcare Plans (Elevance), Community Care Plan (Broward Health and Memorial Healthcare), and Sunshine State Health Plan (Centene).

The existing contracts expire at the end of 2024. Aetna, Molina, UnitedHealth and AmeriHealth Caritas hold existing contracts and were not chosen for new ones. Sentara Care Alliance (Universal Health Services and Sentara Health Plans) and ImagineCare (CareSource and Spark Pediatrics), also submitted bids but were not selected.

The decisions are not final and plans have 72 hours to decide if they will challenge the contracts. Florida's total Medicaid enrollment is 4.8 million.
