The SNMMI said it had been in communication with Humana since November 2020 regarding its denial of coverage of PET/CT and SPECT/CT procedures.
According to the statement, Humana would not provide coverage because the procedures were “experimental/investigational” and “not identified as widely used and generally accepted for the proposed uses as reported in nationally recognized peer-reviewed medical literature.”
The payer also reversed its decision to deny coverage of the imaging procedures when used to identify gastric and esophageal oncologic indications earlier this year.
At the Becker's 5th Annual Fall Payer Issues Roundtable, taking place November 2–3 in Chicago, payer executives and healthcare leaders will come together to discuss value-based care, regulatory changes, cost management strategies and innovations shaping the future of payer-provider collaboration.
