Blue Shield of California has named Mike Stuart as permanent president and CEO.
Mr. Stuart has served as the company’s CFO since 2022, according to an Aug. 26 Blue Shield of California news release. He has also served as interim president and CEO since March.
He has been with the company since 2014, according to his LinkedIn page. He previously served as senior vice president of finance and vice president of corporate finance and controller.
Before joining Blue Shield, he was CFO of Redwood City, Calif.-based Daughters of Charity Health System (now Verity Health System), “giving him firsthand knowledge of the challenges providers face and the importance of aligning incentives to improve outcomes and access for patients,” according to the release.
In his new role, Mr. Stuart will lead more than 6,500 employees who serve 6 million members with health, dental, vision, Medicaid and Medicare plans.
Blue Shield of California launched a new corporate structure in January, creating a new parent company, Ascendiun, to oversee its health plan and other companies. Paul Markovich, who had served as Blue Shield’s CEO for more than a decade, was named president of Ascendiun. Lois Quam was named Mr. Markovich’s successor at the health plan, but departed in March.
