The undergraduate major, which launched in fall 2023, received financial backing from Wellmark and is intended to support an insurance talent pipeline and industry research in the state, according to a Feb. 6 news release.
The insurance industry comprises 11% of Iowa’s GDP, second only to agriculture, and employs more than 60,000 people. Fewer than 60 universities nationwide have insurance and risk management programs.
“Through this contribution and the strength of our continued partnership, Wellmark and the University of Iowa are working to ensure a bright future for the institute and our industry, while improving the health and well-being of those we serve,” Wellmark President and CEO Cory Harris said.
