Geisinger Health Plan is eliminating nearly 100 positions as part of a restructuring program aimed at stabilizing operations.

“This decision, which only impacts GHP roles, was not made lightly,” a spokesperson for the organization told Becker’s on July 15. “We are providing support and resources to impacted employees, and many will be able to move to other areas within Geisinger, with approximately 2,500 currently open positions across the organization.”

In an internal memo written by Geisinger President and CEO Terry Gilliland, MD, and obtained by the Scranton Times-Tribune, the system cited financial pressures stemming from insufficient reimbursement rates, rising pharmaceutical costs and high member morbidity in its rural markets.

Geisinger Health Plan employed about 1,200 people prior to the layoffs and reported a $231 million operating loss in 2024, according to the news outlet.
