Blue Shield of California is laying off 69 employees, effective July 28.
The insurer filed Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notices May 29. The layoffs span Alameda, El Dorado, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Joaquin and Shasta counties. The insurer said these cuts will affect less than 1% of its workforce. Blue Shield did not respond to a Becker’s question about which types of roles are impacted.
Based on March notices, Blue Shield of California cut the same number of employees in April, with a different distribution across the locations. The payer also laid off hundreds of employees last year, including another seven going into 2026.
“As a nonprofit health plan, Blue Shield of California is driven by our mission to provide access to high-quality healthcare that’s sustainably affordable,” a spokesperson told Becker’s in a June 9 statement. ”We regularly adjust our staff based on business needs — reducing headcount in some areas and adding in others — while continuing to grow and transform across the organization. This is a healthy business practice and demonstrates our continual growth and agility as an organization, while ensuring that there is no impact on our members.”
Affected employees may remain on the job for up to 90 days, apply to internal positions and receive skills training. The spokesperson said, in 2025, these efforts helped redeploy 37% of affected employees to new roles within the organization.
