Blue Shield of California will lay off 61 employees, according to WARN notices filed Oct. 2.
The layoffs will affect employees in several locations, including Oakland and Palmdale, Calif.
"As a nonprofit health plan, Blue Shield of California is driven by its mission to provide access to quality health care that’s sustainably affordable for all," a Blue Shield of California spokesperson said in a statement shared with Becker's. "This includes reducing administrative costs, operating efficiently, and ensuring we have the right talent, skills, and capabilities in place. With that in mind and the economic headwinds we are now facing, we have decided to reduce our staff by 61 positions, or less than 1% of our workforce."
The affected employees have been offered assistance with job search and skills training activities for up to 90 days while on the job, the spokesperson said.
The layoffs will be effective Dec. 12, according to the WARN documents.
In January, Blue Shield of California laid off 140 employees.
