Alongside other community partners, UPMC will train Black barbers and stylists in Allegheny County about how to speak with clients about substance use, anxiety, depression, suicide prevention, and referral resources, according to a May 23 news release.

The first group of trainees are located in Homestead, Homewood, Monroeville, Pitcairn, Penn Hills, Oakland, Swissvale, West Mifflin, and Uptown. All participants completed a two-day training session and were paid a stipend for participation. UPMC provides a monthly consultation to participants and has set up a concierge wellness line for referrals.
