The most popular Medicare supplement benefits

Four in 10 Medicare supplement enrollees opt for the plan with the most comprehensive set of benefits, according to a report from AHIP.

The report, published April 6, broke down the enrollment in each of the 14 standardized Medicare supplement plan options. 

The top three plans account for over 80 percent of enrollment, according to the report. 

The share of original Medicare enrollees adding Medicare supplement plans is on the rise, with 14.6 million enrollees nationwide in 2021. 

Here’s what the most popular standard options offer: 

Plan F – 41 percent of enrollees 

  • Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are used up
  • Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • Blood (first 3 pints)
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Part A deductible
  • Part B deductible
  • Part B excess charges
  • Foreign travel exchange up to 80 percent

Plan G – 32 percent of enrollees 

  • All Plan F benefits except for Part B deductible

Plan N – 10 percent of enrollees

  • Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are used up
  • Part B coinsurance with some copays 
  • Blood (first 3 pints)
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
  • Part A deductible 
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Foreign travel exchange up to 80 percent
