UnitedHealthcare has at least 75% of the Medicare Advantage market in three cities, according to the American Medical Association.
The group published its annual "Competition in Health Insurance" report in December. According to the organization, 71% of metropolitan areas have "highly concentrated" markets, meaning one payer controls more than 30% of the Medicare Advantage market.
UnitedHealthcare is the largest Medicare Advantage provider. Some of the cities where it has its largest overall market share have a low share of Medicare beneficiaries opting for Medicare Advantage. In Cheyenne and Casper, Wyo., fewer than 20% of Medicare eligibles were enrolled in the program in 2022, according to an analysis from Chartis.
