Payers including Anthem, Cigna and CVS Health contributed to a pool of nearly $300,000 in donations to Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., following his swing vote blocking President Joe Biden's $1.75 trillion Build Back Better spending package, according to CNBC.
The package was slated to expand vision and dental coverage under Medicare and cut down ACA premiums by an average of $600 per person. Before the bill was trimmed down from its $3.5 trillion price point, it also included the ability for Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices.
Democrats narrowly hold a majority in Congress, but Manchin's vote against the package delivered a win to its opponents. Manchin began to receive donations from entities opposing the package following an announcement.
Donations from payers and other supporters ranged from $1,500 to $5,000.
