Oregon expects to insure 100,000 under new program

Oregon has launched a program to provide Medicaid benefits to individuals earning up to 200% of the federal poverty level, the Oregon Capital Chronicle reported July 1.

The Oregon Health Authority Bridge Plan launched July 1. The state expects to cover 100,000 people through the program by 2027.

Oregon is the third state to establish a program to insure individuals who make too much to qualify for Medicaid but do not have another form of insurance. Minnesota and New York have similar programs, but Oregon's will be the first to offer the coverage with no premiums or copays, according to the Chronicle.

The program was approved by CMS through a Medicaid waiver. The federal government will divert funds that would have paid for subsidized ACA marketplace coverage in Oregon to the program. Oregon will pay the remaining costs, according to the report.
