New York Attorney General Letitia James reported $1.53 million in restitution and savings in 2025 through her office’s healthcare helpline, according to a March 23 news release.

The helpline acts as a resource for New Yorkers seeking clarity on bills, claims and care access. Last year, advocates directly intervened in 3,279 complaints and managed 4,890 complaints overall. Provider billing, wrongful practices, claim-processing errors and health plan denials made up the majority of complaints, in that order.

Complaints regarding denials of coverage were up 1% from 2024. Claim-processing and payment issues also slightly increased year over year. Wrongful practices — including improper refunds, improper collections and other inefficiencies — increased 5%, accounting for 13% of helpline complaints in 2025.

While only 5% of helpline complaints were centered on retaining health coverage, 30% of those were due to a plan error, and 13% stemmed from an employer error.

At the Becker's 5th Annual Fall Payer Issues Roundtable, taking place November 17–19 in Chicago, payer executives and healthcare leaders will come together to discuss value-based care, regulatory changes, cost management strategies and innovations shaping the future of payer-provider collaboration.
