Lawmakers want payers to cover home COVID-19 tests after the PHE ends

A group of senators is calling on health plans to continue covering at-home COVID-19 tests for members when the public health emergency comes to an end.

Sens. Ed Markey, Elizabeth Warren and Martin Heinrich, all Democrats, sent a letter to AHIP President Matt Eyles on Feb. 17 asking member plans to continue covering at-home COVID tests when the public health emergency sunsets in May.

Plans have been required to reimburse members for at-home tests since January 2022.

In the letter, lawmakers also expressed concern that some payers have not complied with obligations to pay for the tests or have created administrative hurdles for members to have the cost of tests reimbursed.

"While the public health emergency may end, the risks associated with COVID-19 have not. No one should ever be forced to choose between health and financial security," the lawmakers wrote.
