Connecticut will start distributing health insurance subsidies worth up to $1,200 annually to early childhood educators on Jan. 1.
According to the Connecticut Office of Early Education, the subsidy is available to all early childhood educators eligible for coverage through the state-based exchange, Access Health CT, regardless of immigration status.
These educators need to work in licensed group child care homes, family child care homes and center-based programs. Eligible roles include family child care teachers, preschool and infant or toddler teachers, directors, and administrative and support staff at state-licensed child care programs. Public school preschool teachers are ineligible.
The annual subsidy is based on household income as a percentage of the federal poverty level. The subsidy will be $1,200 when household income is between 175% and 250%, $1,100 when household income is between 250% and 400%, and $1,000 when household income is above 400% of the federal poverty level.
Kate Farrar, a Democratic state representative, told NBC Connecticut that the subsidy is directly applied on the back end once an eligible educator signs up.
“We’re looking forward to this going into effect because states across the country have really been struggling with how to address this health insurance issue for our educators,” she said.
