California governor vetoes hormone therapy insurance mandate

California Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a state bill that would have required health insurance policies with outpatient prescription drug benefits to cover up to a year of hormone therapy, according to an Oct. 13 update to the legislation.

Current law requires pharmacies to fill prescriptions of 12-month supplies of hormonal contraceptives but not hormone therapy.

The bill also would have included nondiscrimination protections.

The move comes after Mr. Newsom recently signed laws boosting mental health resource accessibility for LGBTQ youth and expanding privacy protections for transgender people.
