Bipartisan bill aims to expand lung cancer screening by cutting through ‘insurance red tape’

U.S. Reps. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., have reintroduced a bill to widen access to lung cancer screenings, according to a Nov. 20 news release.

The bill prevents Medicaid, traditional Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and group and individual markets from relying on prior authorization requirements for these screenings. Cost sharing would not be allowed for state Medicaid plans, either.

“By making lung cancer screenings easier to access and eliminating surprise bills and insurance red tape, this bipartisan bill will help neighbors catch cancer earlier, stay healthier and live longer,” Ms. Castor said.

The bill’s November reintroduction occurs amid Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
