Anthem Blue Cross is halting reimbursement of consultation services for its commercial plans.
The payer will no longer reimburse inpatient and outpatient consultation CPT codes 99241-99245 and 99251-99255, according to a March 16 update from the California Medical Association.
Providers will instead need to bill using the evaluation and management procedure code that describes the visit.
The medical association said Anthem's policy follows similar ones implemented by Cigna and UnitedHealthcare.
