8 payers sign on to Washington's value-based care pact

Eight payers have signed an agreement to promote value-based payment models in Washington state.

The insurers signed a memorandum of understanding on July 8, agreeing to implement alternative payment models for primary care. The insurers also agreed to align on onboarding for providers, a common definition of primary care and coordinated communications.

The implementation of payment frameworks will vary by payer, but each signee must offer models with incentives for quality, and may opt to provide upfront investments in providers' infrastructure. Payers and providers will jointly agree on which measures are tied to payment incentives, according to the agreement.

UnitedHealthcare, Regence BlueShield, Kaiser Permanente Washington, Molina Healthcare of Washington, Premera Blue Cross, Community Health Plan of Washington, Wellpoint Washington, and Coordinated Care signed on to the agreement.
