Will Mississippi move on Medicaid expansion in 2024?

Mississippi could consider Medicaid expansion next year, Mississippi Rep. Jason White told Mississippi Today.

In an interview published Sept. 7, Mr. White, who will likely be the next leader of the state's House of Representatives, said Medicaid expansion will be up for consideration under his leadership.

"I think we as Republicans have probably earned a little bit of the bad rap we get on healthcare in Mississippi," Mr. White told Mississippi Today. "Part of that is that we haven't had a full-blown airing or discussion of Medicaid expansion. We've just said, 'No.'"

Mississippi is one of 10 states that have not expanded Medicaid to all low-income adults. The state had among the highest uninsured rates in the country in 2021, at 11.9 percent, according to America's Health Rankings.

Mr. White's comments put him in opposition to the state's governor, Tate Reeves, who is "vowing he'll continue to block Medicaid expansion," according to Mississippi Today.
