Why Oscar Health published its AI prototypes

Oscar Health published a glimpse into how the payer uses AI.

The company published its research on large-language AI models and several potential use cases in the healthcare industry.

"AI research moves too fast for companies to do this work behind closed doors, so we're sharing ours for others to read and comment," Oscar Health's President of Technology and founder Mario Schlosser said in a June 28 tweet.

Some of Oscar Health's potential AI uses include:

  • Campaign builders to identify if members would benefit from enrollment in certain programs, like maternity care
  • A claims assistant to break down how claims were paid for Oscar staff to assist members and providers
  • A chat assistant to aid insurance brokers
  • An AI summarizer to document conversations between Oscar's medical team and patients

"Insurers have a unique purview because they manage the flow of money through healthcare. [Large-language models] work well where you go back and forth between structured and unstructured data. And healthcare is the fullest of any industry of both," Mr. Schlosser said on Twitter. "So, explaining claims logic, simplifying specialist search, generating system configuration code and deprecating software libraries are all in scope."
