Why CareOregon bought a hotel

CareOregon will convert a hotel in Seaside, Ore., into housing for healthcare workers and for CareOregon members with behavioral health needs.

According to a March 8 news release, Columbia Pacific CCO, a subsidiary of CareOregon (a nonprofit Medicaid managed care organization), will operate the housing.

Two-thirds of the 50 to 60 housing units in the converted hotel will be reserved for healthcare workers.

A lack of housing is a major barrier to attracting healthcare providers in the rural Columbia Pacific region, Pam Cooper, Providence Seaside Hospital's director of finance, said.

"I spend a lot of my time trying to find leases, find rooms, make arrangements with Airbnbs so we can have our shifts covered. The investment from CareOregon and Columbia Pacific is going to help us address this need," she said.
