White House touts 2023 ACA marketplace options as 'most competitive in history'

Ahead of the beginning of open enrollment on the ACA marketplace, the Biden administration is touting 2023 as the most "competitive marketplace in history" for exchange plans.

According to a CMS news release published Oct. 26, 92 percent of Americans will have three or more options to choose from on the marketplace. This number is up from 89 percent last year.

"We have been tireless in our efforts to increase competition, drive down costs, and connect people to coverage," HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in the news release.

Here are five more numbers to know about this year's ACA Marketplace.

  1. Four in 5 customers will be able to purchase a plan for $10 or less, due to increased ACA marketplace subsidies added as part of the Inflation Reduction Act.

  2. The average enrollee has between six and seven plan issuers to choose from in 2023.

  3. A total of 220 insurers will offer plans on the marketplace this year, an increase of 7 from 2022.

  4. Just 1 percent of residents have just one plan issuer to choose from on the marketplace.

  5. While the overall number of insurers increased, 16 states have counties where there are fewer insurers offering plans than last year.
