Wellmark lost $99 million in Iowa’s individual market over the past two years. The insurer said new policyholders used more healthcare than anticipated.
About 7,000 policyholders with rich-benefit “gold-tier” plans will need to find new plans. A number of current PPO policyholders, however, will be able to keep their plans.
The insurer will sustain narrow network plans with Des Moines, Iowa-based Mercy Health System and Iowa City-based University of Iowa Health Care. It will continue selling its health maintenance organization plans.
