Washington state fines Molina Healthcare for enrollment, billing errors

The Washington state insurance commissioner's office fined Molina Healthcare of Washington $100,000 for enrollment and billing errors.

The office opened a review of Molina's enrollment and billing system in 2021 after a "significant increase in consumer complaints against the company," according to a March 12 news release from the commissioner's office. That included two complaints about claims for preauthorized services being denied.

Molina moved to a third-party enrollment and premium billing platform in April 2021 to address an increase in enrollment through the state health benefit exchange, according to the release. Prior to the change, Molina had identified multiple issues with its billing system, including  sending incorrect invoices to nearly 2,000 people and incorrectly terminating coverage for 22 members.

Even after the transition, Molina continued to experience issues with enrollment and billing according to the release. This included 259 transactions that were not fully loaded into the system, leading to incorrect premium balances, and 55 members incorrectly terminated for non-payment.

Molina did not immediately respond to a request from Becker's for comment on the fine.
