Viewpoint: Repealing individual mandate will increase prevalence of ACOs, health savings accounts

Elimination of the ACA’s individual mandate under Republicans’ tax reform “opens up the possibility for innovation,” John Sarich, an insurance industry analyst and vice president of strategy at VUE Software, wrote in an op-ed published by The Hill.

Mr. Sarich writes expansion of health savings accounts and health maintenance organizations will occur under Republicans’ tax bill. Specifically, he listed four ways tax reform could affect healthcare:

1. HSAs could become a permanent trait of the healthcare industry

2. More patient-centered care will be administered through ACOs

3. Patient services will be decentralized from regional hospitals to small, local outlets

4. The insurance market will comprise association group health plans and the ability to sell insurance across state lines
