UnitedHealthcare, MUSC contract negotiations affect over 50,000 patients

At least 54,000 people are facing the loss of in-network coverage at the Medical University of South Carolina if a contract dispute with UnitedHealthcare is not resolved before Sept. 14, according to The Post and Courier.

The newspaper reported April 12 that Charleston, S.C.-based MUSC first notified patients with United plans about the potential coverage loss in November.

"We are still in discussions with United," an MUSC spokesperson told the Post. "We hope to reach an amicable conclusion in these negotiations."

A spokesperson for United told the Post it is still in discussions with the provider "and continues to make progress toward an agreement that would ensure uninterrupted access to its facilities and its physicians."

Some United members in the middle of serious treatments will qualify for continuity of care if an agreement isn't reached, according to the spokesperson. Qualifying patients include pregnant women, patients with newly diagnosed or relapsed cancer, and those going through an active cancer treatment.
