UnitedHealthcare has 28% of Medicare Advantage market nationwide

UnitedHealthcare has the largest share of the nation’s Medicare Advantage market, according to a study from the American Medical Association.

The 2022 “Competition in Health Insurance” report, published Nov. 1, analyzed the market shares for insurers on the state and city level. 

UnitedHealthcare had 28 percent of the market, followed by Humana at 19 percent. 

Most local MA markets are highly concentrated, according to the AMA. The report found that 34 percent of metropolitan areas have one payer with more than a 50 percent share of the market. 

Payers with the largest MA market shares:

  1. UnitedHealthcare — 28 percent 
  2. Humana — 19 percent 
  3. CVS Health — 11 percent
  4. Kaiser Permanente — 7 percent 
  5. Elevance Health — 6 percent 
  6. Centene — 4 percent 
  7. Cigna — 2 percent 
  8. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan — 2 percent 
  9. Highmark — 1 percent 
  10. SCAN Health Plan — 1 percent
