UnitedHealth Group posts $5.5B profit in Q2

UnitedHealth Group recorded double-digit growth in revenue year over year across its lines of business at UnitedHealthcare and Optum, according to the company's second-quarter earnings report released July 14.

"Our diverse healthcare capabilities and dedicated colleagues are enabling us to meet the needs of more people in more ways, driving substantial growth and expanding our opportunities to serve well into the future," CEO Andrew Witty said.

UnitedHealth Group

  • Total revenues in the second quarter were $92.9 billion, up 15.7 percent year over year.

  • Total net earnings in the second quarter were nearly $5.5 billion, up 8 percent year over year.

  • The full-year adjusted net earnings outlook was raised to between $24.70 to $25.00 per share.

  • The company's medical loss ratio was 83.2 percent in the second quarter compared to 81.5 percent the same time last year, driven by increased outpatient care activity, primarily among seniors, and business mix. Days claims payable were 48.2 in the second quarter compared to 50.6 a year ago.

UnitedHealthcare

  • Total revenues in the second quarter were $70.2 billion, up 13.1 percent year over year.

  • Total earnings from operations in the second quarter were nearly $4.4 billion, up 13.2 percent year over year.

  • As of June 30, total U.S. membership is 47.5 million. Commercial membership is 27.2 million. There are 8.4 million Medicaid members, 7.6 million Medicare Advantage members, and 4.3 million members with Medicare supplement plans. Part D plan membership is 3.4 million.

Optum

  • Total revenues in the second quarter were $56.3 billion, up 25 percent year over year and led by Optum Rx.

  • Total earnings from operations in the second quarter were $3.7 billion, up 12.7 percent year over year.

  • In the second quarter, Optum Rx revenues were $28.6 billion, Optum Health revenues were $23.9 billion and Optum Insight revenues were $4.7 billion.

  • Optum Health revenue per consumer increased 33 percent year over year, driven by the more than 900,000 patients served under value-based care arrangements and the continued expansion of services offered.
