UnitedHealth Group is investing $100 million to build affordable housing, starting in Georgia, North Carolina and Oregon, with additional locations to be named in the coming months, the healthcare company said last week.
Construction of affordable housing communities is underway in East Point, Ga.; Monroe, N.C.; and Beaverton, Ore., according to an April 7 UnitedHealth Group news release. About 250 homes will be built for older adults and families.
A $1 million investment will support on-site health-related services for the additional locations as development proposals are finalized. The money will be used by Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future to measure, analyze and report on property residents’ health outcomes.
More than 1,000 homes are expected to be built through UnitedHealth Group's new investment, according to the release.
UnitedHealth first partnered with National Affordable Housing Trust and Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future, a nonprofit syndicator and development consultant also working on this project, in 2020 when it provided $118 million for 15 affordable housing communities in 11 states and Washington, D.C. It also provided more than $1 million in grants to support on-site health-related services for residents that year.
