UnitedHealth, AARP team up with USC, Lyft to get low-income seniors to medical appointments

Ride share company Lyft and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles received $1 million from the AARP Foundation, part of a $6 million grant from UnitedHealth Group, to pilot a senior transportation program, CNBC reports.

The program, run by AARP Foundation in Los Angeles, will offer free Lyft rides to seniors scheduled for upcoming appointments at USC Keck Medical Center, also in Los Angeles. Qualifying patients include those who are more than 60 years of age and who missed at least two medical appointments in the last year.

Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth’s grant to AARP will help fund rides for three months, and USC researchers will study what affects the initiative has on participating seniors’ health, the report states.

Additional pilots are slated for Chicago and Atlanta in 2018.
