United Health Foundation investing $100M to create more diverse healthcare workforce

The United Health Foundation is making a $100 million investment over the next 10 years to advance health equity by helping to build a more racially and ethnically diverse healthcare workforce.

The commitment is the largest ever announced by the philanthropic arm of UnitedHealth Group, according to a June 8 news release.

New programs and partnerships will be used to provide scholarships and support to 10,000 future clinicians and healthcare professionals. That support will help fund academic degrees or other professional credentials in medicine, nursing, midwifery, mental health and other specialties.

"Today, there are far too many barriers to good health that are disproportionately experienced by people of color, historically marginalized groups and those with lower incomes,” UnitedHealth Group Chief Sustainability Officer Patricia Lewis said. "We are committed to leading the way, along with our partner organizations, in deploying tools, talent and resources to actively break down barriers, broaden access to care and make it easier for people to live healthier."
