Active-duty family members enrolled in Tricare Prime Remote will no longer face copays when filling covered prescriptions, according to a Jan. 27 news release from the military’s healthcare program.

Tricare Prime Remote is a managed care offering for military families in remote parts of the U.S. To qualify, the sponsoring service member must live and work more than 50 miles or a one-hour drive from a military medical facility.

The policy will take effect Feb. 28 and apply to prescriptions filled at retail pharmacies and through home delivery.

“This change will help military families without access to military pharmacies keep their pharmacy costs down,” the Defense Health Agency’s Pharmacy Integration Branch Chief Teisha Robertson, PharmD, said.

Nonformulary drugs will warrant medical necessity approval from Express Scripts, Tricare’s pharmacy benefit manager.
