The state with the most uninsured residents saw record ACA enrollment in 2022

The number of Texans who received health coverage in 2022 under the Affordable Care Act grew 42 percent from the year prior, according to a study from the Houston-based Episcopal Health Foundation.

The study released April 8 examined CMS enrollment data from the 2022 open enrollment period from Nov. 1, 2021, to Jan. 15, 2022. 

U.S. census data released March 17 shows Texas has a higher rate of uninsured residents than any other state at 17.3 percent.

  • Over 1.84 million Texans enrolled in ACA coverage in 2022, compared to nearly 1.3 million in 2021. 
  • Returning enrollees made up 73 percent of 2022 enrollments, while new enrollees made up 27 percent.
  • Enrollees in 2022 were 55 percent women, and 87 percent lived in urban areas.
  • Adults ages 55 to 64 comprised 25 percent of all enrollees, followed by adults ages 45 to 54 at 20 percent.
  • Seven in 10 enrollees were low- or moderately low-income.
  • Ninety-four percent of enrollees received premium tax credits.
  • Average premium costs were $557 per month, but with tax credits, the average cost of the premiums was $86 per month. 
  • Sixty-four percent of enrollees selected a silver plan, 26 percent selected a bronze plan and 9 percent selected gold.
