The 2 payers that account for nearly half of Medicare Advantage enrollees

Medicare Advantage enrollment is highly concentrated among a small number of payers, with just two payers accounting for 47 percent of all enrollees in 2023, according to an Aug. 9 analysis from KFF.

UnitedHealthcare accounts for 29 percent of all Medicare Advantage enrollees in 2023, and Humana accounts for 18 percent, according to the report. Those figures represent 8.9 million and 5.5 million enrollees, respectively.

The two payers have consistently accounted for a large share of Medicare Advantage enrollment, according to the report. UnitedHealthcare's share has grown from 20 percent in 2010 to 29 percent this year, while Humana's has grown from 16 percent to 18 percent over that timeframe.

In 32 percent of U.S. counties, UnitedHealthcare and Humana account for at least 75 percent of Medicare Advantage enrollment, according to the report.
